“Life is not about starting, it’s about finishing.”
Starting is easy. Starting is fun. Starting is new and exciting, but starting is only the beginning. The treasures of life are not found at the beginning, it’s found in the completion of the journey.
In the bible, it says, “The race is not for to the swift nor the battle to the strong, but to those who endure it to the end.“ (Ecclesiastes 9:11)
What this scripture is aiming to teach us collectively is that you don’t have to be the best, the tallest, the fastest, the smartest, the best-looking, or the wealthiest person to complete the race. All that is required is for you is to stay in the race until the end. This also means that all of your excuses for why you can’t finish the race are canceled.
So, what is the race?
For the sake of this blog, the race is the journey/pathway to your dream or desired future. Eg. You may want to be a sous’ chef, a professional basketball player, a movie actor, or you may want to open an orthopedic shoe store. Whatever your dream is, it’s yours, but the challenge of life is to see your dream all the way through.
With that said, here are some fundamental keys to finishing the race to your dream,
#1-You have to be strong in your mind. You have to believe in the dream/vision that God gave you. Your dream/vision is the thing that causes you to see and envision a successful future. *Don’t let anyone cause you to doubt your dream or cause you to change course.
#2-Don’t let your mind be corrupted by what you see or hear. It is easy to become discouraged and distraught by other people’s failures and negative experiences. You must keep in mind, not because an individual failed means you also will fail or have the same negative experience that they had. Be mindful of the people in your circle, like family, friends, teachers, or supervisor/s who may inadvertently or purposely speak negativity towards you and your dream. *Don’t let the words of ill-minded individuals impact your mind and/or dream.
#3-Don’t be afraid to fail or be rejected. Momentary failure and rejection aren’t easy to accept, but if you learn to face it and deal with it, something greater will happen. *You may even create a light bulb
“I never once failed at making a light bulb. I just found out 99 ways not to make one.”
#4-Life is a process. Nowadays, everything is about convenience and instant gratification, but life doesn’t subscribe to the easy way of achieving goals. Real success will be tested by life’s trials and hardships. Shortcuts won’t prepare you for the tests, that life will put you through. If you want to be successful, you will have to put in the time and the work. *Even baking a cake takes time, gathering ingredients, combining them, and then actually putting the batter in the oven to complete the process. Once the process is completed, you then have a cake.
#5-Stickability. Perseverance is key. If you want to be successful, you have to stick with it and outlast the tests, the hardships, and the momentary failures. Once you start the race, stick with it until the end. *You will never cross the finish line, or make it to your desired destination if you give up mid-way through the race or be detoured at the first sign of difficulty.
Although finishing the race to dream may be grueling, it is attainable. If you want to see your dream become a reality, you must be confident in yourself, guard your mind against negativity, be willing to put in the work, and be dedicated to the outcome. If you put these fundamentals principles into practice, you will not only make your dream come true, but you will have fulfilled your life’s purpose.
